3 Days in Athens: A Complete Itinerary

Three days covers the Acropolis, Plaka, and a coastal day trip at a comfortable pace, without rushing the city's main archaeological sites.

Day 1: The Acropolis

Arrive as early as the site opens, with a timed ticket booked ahead if visiting in peak season, to see the Parthenon before the heat and crowds build. In the afternoon, visit the Acropolis Museum at the base of the hill, then wind down with an early evening wander through Plaka.

Day 2: Ancient Agora and Monastiraki

Spend the morning at the Ancient Agora, the political heart of ancient Athens and notably quieter than the Acropolis itself. In the afternoon, explore Monastiraki's flea market and the surrounding streets, then continue into central Athens for Syntagma Square if the changing of the guard ceremony timing works out.

Day 3: Cape Sounion

Take a day trip to Cape Sounion, roughly an hour from central Athens, timed to end with sunset at the Temple of Poseidon on its dramatic coastal cliff. Use the earlier part of the day for anything missed in the city center, or simply a slower morning.

Getting around

The metro covers longer distances efficiently; the historic center is walkable; Cape Sounion is reached by bus or a booked tour.
