3 Days in Cusco Before or After the Inca Trail

3 Days in Cusco Before or After the Inca Trail

Three days in Cusco works well either as a stand-alone city visit or as the acclimatization and bookend days around a trek — this itinerary assumes you want to see the city properly rather than just pass through.

Day 1: Easing into the altitude

Keep this day deliberately gentle. Wander the Plaza de Armas and the cathedral facing it, then explore San Pedro Market for a look at local produce, prepared food stalls, and everyday Cusco life rather than a tourist-oriented experience. Avoid anything strenuous — this day is really about acclimatizing.

Day 2: Sacsayhuaman and the nearby ruins

Sacsayhuaman, an enormous Inca fortress complex on a hill above the city, is the main event, with massive stone blocks fitted together without mortar. Nearby, smaller sites including Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay can be combined into the same half-day, either walking or with a short taxi between them.

Day 3: The Sacred Valley, or rest

If you have the energy and haven't already built it into your trip, a day trip into the Sacred Valley to see Pisac and Ollantaytambo rounds out a well-paced three days — see our dedicated Sacred Valley guide. If you're heading straight into a multi-day trek afterward, consider using this day to rest instead.

Eating and drinking

Cusco has a genuinely good food scene beyond tourist-oriented restaurants — see our guide to the best restaurants and markets in Cusco for where locals actually eat.

If you're building this around a trek, make sure your three days include real acclimatization time — see our guide to how many days you actually need to adjust to Cusco's altitude.
