3 Days in Kyoto in Spring: A First-Timer's Itinerary

3 Days in Kyoto in Spring: A First-Timer's Itinerary

Three days is enough for a genuinely satisfying first visit to Kyoto in spring, mixing the city's most iconic sights with at least one quieter, less crowded stop each day.

Day 1: Fushimi Inari and Gion

Start at Fushimi Inari Taisha, ideally early, and climb as far up through the thousands of vermillion torii gates as your time and energy allow — you don't need to reach the summit to get the full effect. In the evening, walk Gion's lantern-lit streets and Hanamikoji, Kyoto's best-preserved geisha district.

Day 2: Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji

Spend the morning in Arashiyama for the bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji's garden, then head across the city in the afternoon to Kinkaku-ji, the golden pavilion that's one of Kyoto's most recognizable images.

Day 3: Higashiyama and Nishiki Market

Walk up to Kiyomizu-dera in the morning, then work your way down through the preserved lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka. If your trip lines up with cherry blossom season, add the Philosopher's Path here for a walk lined with blossoming trees. End the day at Nishiki Market for a final round of food before you leave.

Getting around

Kyoto's bus network covers most of these stops, though the city's subway and trains are faster for longer distances between neighborhoods like Arashiyama and Higashiyama.

What to expect from spring weather

Mild and generally pleasant, though early spring mornings can still be cool enough for a light jacket — see our guide to Kyoto's cherry blossom timing if the blossoms themselves are the point of your trip, since exact bloom dates shift year to year.
