4 Days in Lisbon: A Complete Itinerary

Four days covers central Lisbon's historic neighborhoods and a full day trip to Sintra at a comfortable pace.

Day 1: Baixa and Alfama

Start in Baixa, the flat downtown grid, then ride Tram 28 into Alfama for its narrow lanes and hilltop views. Book an evening fado performance in one of Alfama's small venues to end the day.

Day 2: Belem

Spend the day in Belem — Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower, and a stop at Pasteis de Belem for the custard tart the bakery is credited with originating. The Monument to the Discoveries is a short walk from the tower if you want a third stop.

Day 3: Sao Jorge Castle and Bairro Alto

Climb to Sao Jorge Castle in the morning for the best view over the city and river. Spend the afternoon in Chiado for shopping, and Bairro Alto in the evening for its concentration of bars and restaurants.

Day 4: Sintra

Take the train to Sintra for a full day — Pena Palace is the highlight, booked with a timed entry in advance, and Quinta da Regaleira is worth adding if you have the energy for a second palace-and-garden visit.

Getting around

Tram 28, the metro, and funiculars cover the city efficiently; the train to Sintra departs from Rossio Station.
