4 Days in Rio de Janeiro: A Complete Itinerary

4 Days in Rio de Janeiro: A Complete Itinerary

Four days covers Rio's iconic viewpoints, beaches, and at least one neighborhood beyond the beachfront at a comfortable pace.

Day 1: Christ the Redeemer and Santa Teresa

Start with Christ the Redeemer, checking weather conditions first since the view depends entirely on clear skies. In the afternoon, explore Santa Teresa's cobblestone streets and art galleries, stopping at the Selaron Steps on the way down.

Day 2: Copacabana and Ipanema

Spend the day at the beach — Copacabana in the morning, Ipanema in the afternoon, walking the connecting promenade between them. This is a good day to simply slow down and take in the beach culture rather than sightseeing on a schedule.

Day 3: Sugarloaf Mountain and the harbor

Ride the two-stage cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain, ideally timed for sunset to see the harbor and city lit up as the light changes. Spend the earlier part of the day exploring the harbor area or the historic center if colonial architecture and museums interest you.

Day 4: Tijuca National Park or a flexible day

Spend the day hiking in Tijuca National Park for waterfalls and forest within the city limits, or use the day flexibly — a Maracana Stadium tour, more beach time, or a return visit to a favorite spot.

Getting around

The metro connects Copacabana and Ipanema efficiently; taxis or ride-hailing apps are the practical choice for Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, and Santa Teresa.

What to pack

A swimsuit and light clothing for the beach days, comfortable shoes for Santa Teresa and Tijuca — see our Rio de Janeiro travel guide for the fuller packing list and important safety notes.
