4 Days in Rome: A Complete Itinerary
Four days lets you cover ancient Rome, Vatican City, and the historic center at a reasonable pace without the exhaustion of trying to do it all in two or three.
Day 1: Ancient Rome
Start early at the Colosseum with a timed-entry ticket, then continue directly into the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, which are covered by the same ticket. In the afternoon, walk to the Pantheon and spend some time in the surrounding streets before an evening visit back to the Trevi Fountain, which is genuinely calmer after dark than during the day.
Day 2: Vatican City
Dedicate the full day to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel in the morning — book ahead, since lines without a timed ticket can run for hours. In the afternoon, visit St. Peter's Basilica, and climb the dome if you have the energy for the stairs; the view over Rome is one of the best in the city.
Day 3: Piazzas and Trastevere
Spend the morning wandering Piazza Navona and the surrounding lanes, then continue to Campo de' Fiori for its daytime market. In the afternoon, cross the Tiber into Trastevere for a slower-paced neighborhood with a strong evening restaurant scene — stay for dinner here rather than heading back to the tourist-heavy center.
Day 4: Flexible day
Use the final day for whatever you missed, a return visit to a favorite spot in better light, or a half-day trip to Ostia Antica, Rome's well-preserved ancient port city, if ruins are a particular interest and you want to see more beyond the city center.
Getting around
Much of this itinerary is walkable within each day, with the Metro covering the longer hop to and from Vatican City. Cobblestones throughout the center make comfortable, sturdy shoes worth prioritizing.
What to pack
Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required for St. Peter's Basilica and other churches — see our Rome travel guide for the fuller packing list and more on choosing where to stay.
