5 Days in Reykjavik: A Complete Itinerary

5 Days in Reykjavik: A Complete Itinerary

Five days covers Reykjavik itself plus the Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon, and South Coast without over-scheduling any single day around Iceland's unpredictable weather.

Day 1: Reykjavik city

Start at Hallgrimskirkja, riding the elevator up its tower for a rooftop view over the city's colorful streets. Spend the afternoon wandering downtown's Laugavegur shopping street and the Old Harbour, and consider an evening whale-watching or northern lights tour depending on season.

Day 2: The Golden Circle

Devote the full day to Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall, in that order to minimize backtracking. Start early to allow flexibility if weather or crowds slow any one stop.

Day 3: The Blue Lagoon

Spend a relaxed day at the Blue Lagoon — many visitors combine it with an airport transfer given its location between Reykjavik and Keflavik Airport, so this works well either early or late in your trip.

Day 4: The South Coast

Drive (or join a tour) along the South Coast to Seljalandsfoss, where a path leads behind the falls, and Skogafoss a short distance further. Both are full days round-trip from Reykjavik, so start early.

Day 5: Flexible day

Use a final day for anything weather delayed earlier in the trip, a second attempt at the northern lights if visible conditions didn't align, or a quieter day exploring Reykjavik's museums and cafes.

Getting around

A rental car gives the most flexibility for the Golden Circle and South Coast; organized day tours are a reliable alternative if you'd rather not drive. Reykjavik itself is entirely walkable.

What to pack

A waterproof, windproof layer and a swimsuit for the Blue Lagoon matter regardless of season — see our Reykjavik travel guide for the fuller packing breakdown.
