Banff Autumn Itinerary: 4 Days Before the Snow

Autumn in Banff is a trade: you give up a bit of the reliable warmth of summer in exchange for thinner crowds, better hotel availability, and — for a couple of weeks — the larches. This itinerary is built around that trade.

Day 1: Banff townsite and hot springs

Ease into the trip with the Banff Gondola for an overview of the valley, then the Banff Upper Hot Springs in the late afternoon — genuinely more appealing once the air has a little autumn chill to it than in the heat of summer.

Day 2: Larch Valley

If your trip lands within the larch window (roughly the last week of September, though it shifts year to year), this is the day to commit to it. Book the Moraine Lake shuttle as early as possible and start the hike early. If you're outside the larch window, substitute a lower-elevation hike from our Banff day hikes guide instead, since larch color is genuinely weather-dependent and not worth forcing if the timing doesn't line up.

Day 3: Lake Louise and the lower Icefields Parkway

Walk the Lake Louise lakeshore, then drive as far as Peyto Lake on the Icefields Parkway — a shorter version of the full route that's more realistic once autumn days are getting noticeably shorter. Aspens along the Bow Valley Parkway on the return add their own color.

Day 4: A quiet last day

Use the final day for whatever you missed — the Cave and Basin historic site, a wander through the Banff townsite shops, or Vermilion Lakes at sunset for a calm, crowd-free finish.

What to expect weather-wise

Early in the season this can still feel like summer; by late September, expect cold mornings and the real possibility of snow at higher elevations, even if the valley floor stays clear.
