Banff Summer Itinerary: 3 Days in the Canadian Rockies
Three days is enough to get a real feel for Banff without racing between stops. This itinerary keeps driving to a minimum on any one day and leaves room to linger at the two lakes that draw most people here in the first place.
Day 1: Banff townsite
Spend the morning easing in — walk the short paved path to Bow Falls, then follow the river up toward the Fairmont Banff Springs to see the hotel that put Banff on the map as a resort town. In the afternoon, ride the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain; the summit boardwalk gives you a full view of the Bow Valley and is a good way to get your bearings for the rest of the trip. Save dinner for somewhere on Banff Avenue and take a slow evening walk along the river.
Day 2: Lake Louise and Moraine Lake
This is the day to start early — both lakes have limited parking and fill within the first couple of hours of daylight in summer, so most visitors now go by the Parks Canada shuttle or an early tour rather than driving in themselves. Walk the Lake Louise lakeshore trail, then move on to Moraine Lake for the classic view from the rockpile above the boathouse. If you still have energy, the first stretch of the Plain of Six Glaciers trail from Lake Louise is a good way to get above the crowds without committing to a full-day hike.
Day 3: The Icefields Parkway (short version)
Rather than driving the full parkway to Jasper, do an out-and-back as far as Peyto Lake, roughly an hour or so north of Lake Louise. The viewpoint looks down on a lake shaped almost like a wolf's head, colored by glacial silt. On the way back, stop at Johnston Canyon for the walk to the Lower Falls along steel catwalks bolted into the canyon wall. It's an easier outing than either of the day 2 hikes and a good way to end the trip.
A few practical notes
You'll need a Parks Canada park pass for your vehicle at any point during the visit. Book the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake shuttles as early as you can once reservations open for the season — they sell out. And build in slack: mountain weather changes fast, and an afternoon thunderstorm can rearrange your plans on any of these three days.
If hiking is the main draw, our guide to Banff's best day hikes goes deeper on trail options for a longer trip, and the summer packing list below covers what to actually bring. When you're ready to build out a longer or more customized version of this trip, Wayfarer's planner can turn your dates and interests into a full day-by-day itinerary.
