Seven Days in Kyoto: A First-Timer's Itinerary

Seven Days in Kyoto: A First-Timer's Itinerary

Kyoto rewards a slow pace. Over seven days you can cover the essential temples without ever feeling rushed.

Start in Higashiyama, the eastern hills district, where Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage looks out over the city. Walk down through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, the preserved stone streets lined with tea houses and craft shops.

Give Arashiyama a full morning: the bamboo grove is genuinely striking before 8am, before the crowds arrive, and Tenryu-ji's garden is one of the best in the city.

Save at least one evening for Gion, where you might spot a geiko or maiko slipping between appointments. Book a kaiseki dinner if your budget allows — it's the best way to understand why Kyoto's food culture has its own gravity.
