Vancouver Travel Guide: Things to Do, Best Time & Tips

Vancouver sits between the ocean and the North Shore mountains closely enough that both are visible from most of downtown, and Stanley Park's seawall and Granville Island's market anchor a city genuinely built for walking and biking. This guide covers what actually matters for planning a visit.

Best Time to Visit

June to September is Vancouver's driest, warmest, and most reliable window. The city is genuinely rainy from roughly October through April, part of why summer is so strongly recommended — outside that window, expect grey skies and real rain as a normal part of the trip, not a rare inconvenience.

Getting Around

The SkyTrain, an efficient elevated light rail system, covers longer distances across the city and out to the airport. Downtown and the West End are genuinely walkable and bike-friendly, and the Stanley Park seawall, a paved path circling the park's waterfront, is one of the best ways to see the city on foot or by rented bike. Getting to the North Shore mountains (Grouse Mountain, Capilano) generally means a car, bus, or organized tour.

Where to Stay

Downtown and the West End put you closest to Stanley Park and the seawall, with a walkable, dense city feel. Yaletown, a converted warehouse district, offers a trendier, waterfront-adjacent base with a strong restaurant scene. Gastown, the city's oldest neighborhood, suits a visit prioritizing history and nightlife, centered on its steam clock and cobblestone streets.

Top Things to Do

The Stanley Park seawall, roughly 10 kilometers around the park's perimeter, is Vancouver's signature activity — walkable in a few hours or rideable by bike in under two, with views out to the harbor and mountains the entire way. Granville Island Public Market, reached by a short ferry across False Creek, combines fresh produce and prepared food stalls with a genuinely lively, browsable atmosphere.

For the mountains, Grouse Mountain offers a gondola ride up to alpine views, with the option of hiking up via the strenuous "Grouse Grind" trail for those who want to earn the view. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is the well-known, paid option for a swaying bridge walk through the forest canopy; Lynn Canyon, a free alternative nearby, offers a similar suspension bridge experience without the crowds or cost. Gastown rewards a wander for its architecture and the (genuinely more novelty-than-essential) steam clock.

Food

Vancouver's large Chinese, Japanese, and Korean communities give the city a genuinely strong Asian food scene, from casual noodle shops to more elevated dining. Fresh salmon and other seafood reflect the Pacific Northwest setting, and food trucks scattered around downtown are a reliable, casual option for a quick meal between sights.

What to Pack

A rain layer is worth packing regardless of season, though it becomes essential outside the June-to-September window. Comfortable shoes suit the seawall and any North Shore hiking, and layers help with the temperature difference between downtown and higher elevations on the mountains.

Suggested Itinerary

A reasonable three-to-four-day shape: Stanley Park's seawall and downtown on day one, Granville Island and Yaletown on day two, Gastown and a flexible day on day three, and a North Shore mountain excursion (Grouse Mountain or Capilano) on day four.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not packing for rain, especially outside summer, is a common and avoidable discomfort in a city that is genuinely wet much of the year. Treating Whistler as a quick day trip rather than the roughly two-hour-each-way excursion it actually is tends to disappoint; it's better planned as its own overnight extension. And assuming summer weather guarantees zero rain overstates how reliable even the best months are — pack a light layer regardless.
