Overview
South Africa combines one of the world's most beautiful cities, world-class safari, wine country and a dramatic coastline in a single trip, with good roads and infrastructure in between. The classic first route is Cape Town and the Winelands, a drive along the Garden Route, and a safari in or around Kruger National Park, linked by a domestic flight. Two weeks covers all three; ten days works if you skip the Garden Route.
Main regions
Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula. Start with our Cape Town destination page and the 5-day Cape Town itinerary. Table Mountain, the Bo-Kaap's colorful houses, the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, and the drive to Cape Point past the Boulders Beach penguin colony.
The Winelands. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, 45 minutes to an hour from Cape Town, with Cape Dutch estates, tasting rooms and some of the country's best restaurants.
The Garden Route. The coastal drive east from Mossel Bay to the Tsitsikamma forests: the lagoon town of Knysna, Plettenberg Bay's beaches, and the Storms River suspension bridge. Hermanus, on the way, is one of the world's best places for land-based whale watching.
Kruger and the northeast. Kruger National Park, one of Africa's great game reserves, can be driven yourself on good roads; the private reserves bordering it, such as Sabi Sands, offer guided drives in open vehicles and the best leopard sightings. The Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon are nearby.
KwaZulu-Natal. The Drakensberg mountains for hiking and San rock art, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Zulu heritage sites, and Durban's warm Indian Ocean beaches.
Johannesburg. The main international hub, with the essential Apartheid Museum, Soweto, and a lively arts and food scene in Maboneng and Rosebank.
Best time to visit
Seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere's.
- November to March (summer): the best time for Cape Town and the Garden Route: hot, dry and sunny, though often windy. December and January are peak holiday season.
- May to October (dry winter): the best time for safari in Kruger, when vegetation thins and animals gather at waterholes. Malaria risk is also lower. Cape Town is cool and rainy in June to August.
- July to November: southern right whales off Hermanus. Wildflowers bloom in the Namaqualand region in August and September.
- April and May, September and October: the best shoulder months if you're combining the Cape and a safari.
Getting around
- Domestic flights: FlySafair, Airlink and others link Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and the Kruger area; Cape Town to Johannesburg takes about 2 hours.
- Car rental: the best way to see the Cape, the Winelands, the Garden Route and Kruger itself. Traffic drives on the left and roads are good, but avoid driving after dark outside cities, and keep doors locked and valuables out of sight.
- In cities: use Uber or Bolt rather than walking at night or taking minibus taxis. In Johannesburg, the Gautrain links the airport with Sandton and Rosebank.
Visa basics
Citizens of the US, UK, EU countries, Canada, Australia and many others can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. South Africa launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) in August 2026, but it isn't currently required for visa-exempt travelers. Your passport needs at least two completely blank pages and must be valid for 30 days beyond your departure. Airlines do refuse boarding without the blank pages.
Typical daily costs
Prices as of September 2026, at about 16.3 rand to the US dollar:
- Budget (R900–1,400, about $55–85): a backpacker hostel or guesthouse, casual meals, a shared rental car.
- Mid-range (R2,500–4,000, about $155–245): a boutique guesthouse, restaurant meals with wine, a rental car and entry fees.
- Comfort (R7,000+, about $430+): luxury hotels and private game lodges (which are often priced per person per night, all-inclusive, and cost far more).
South Africa is good value for food and wine. Big-ticket items: the Table Mountain cableway costs about R450–500 return, and Kruger's daily conservation fee for international visitors is R602 per adult (to 31 October 2026). There has been no national load-shedding (scheduled power cuts) for more than a year, though some areas still have local outages. Tip 10–15% in restaurants, and a few rand to car guards and petrol attendants.
