Venice

Venice is built across more than 100 small islands in a lagoon, with canals standing in for streets and boats for cars — a UNESCO World Heritage historic center where marble palaces and mosaic-covered basilicas still line the Grand Canal from the city's centuries as a maritime republic.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venice sinking?

The city has genuinely subsided over centuries and faces real flooding risk (acqua alta), most common autumn through early spring, though a major flood barrier system (MOSE) completed in recent years has meaningfully reduced how often it happens.

Do I need to worry about flooding when I visit?

Only during the acqua alta season (roughly October to March) — raised walkways go up quickly in affected areas like St. Mark's Square, and it's rarely trip-ruining.

Is a gondola ride worth it?

It's genuinely touristy and priced accordingly, but remains the single most Venice-specific experience available — worth treating as its own activity rather than practical transport.

Can I visit Venice as a day trip from another city?

You can, but it undersells the experience — the city changes dramatically once day-tripper crowds leave in the evening, and staying at least one night is worth it if your itinerary allows.
